Vandaag vond ik een mooie quote van Brian Greene, de "string-theorist" en schrijver van populair-wetenschappelijke boeken over stringtheorie en kwantumfysica. De quote geeft mooi aan hoe spiritueel een wetenschapper kan zijn zonder religieus te hoeven zijn:
Science and religion both have some things to offer some people. There
are some people for whom religion helps fill in the "why" questions, and
it adds meaning to their lives that otherwise they have difficulty
finding. And there are others for whom science perhaps is enough. I'm
one of those people. Just thinking about the universe, just
contemplating the deep mysteries and trying to find scientific answers
to some of those mysteries I find so thrilling and so satisfying that I
don't find the need to look elsewhere.

Je leest dat vaak: religie geeft betekenis aan het leven. Maar wat IS die betekenis eigenlijk?
Het typerende is dat die zin altijd wordt herhaald, maar niemand zegt er bij WAT die betekenis van het leven nu eigenlijk is.

Als we het toch over wetenschap en religie volgens wetenschappers hebben, dit is wat Stephen Hawking – waarschijnlijk de grootste fysicus van deze tijd – hierover te zeggen heeft:
“One could define God as the embodiment of the laws of nature. However, this is not what most people would think of as God. They mean a human-like being with whom one could have a personal relationship.”
